The American Crayon Company

Brand

Something Missing?

The American Crayon Company formed the name as a merger from several older companies in 1890. The Parmenter Crayon Co. in Walthrop, MA began in 1835 making white chalk and the Western School Supply Co. began in Sandusky, OH around 1865; also making chalk. They joined forced with Tiffin Crayon Co. which had suffered a fire earlier and became American Crayon Co. They headquartered out of Sandusky, OH and used the old Western School Supply facilities until they burned down in 1901. A new factory was built within the year to replace it.

In 1902 they moved into wax crayon products with their first ever catalog featuring a dozen different boxes and wooden containers. It is unclear who influenced their transition over to wax based crayons. Charles M. Bowley, founder of Standard Crayon Co. in 1895, is purported to have played that role and may have even designed their original product line. He eventually became an associate of American Crayon in 1907.
