The Avengers was a television series which ran from 1961 to 1969, following the surreal adventures of spy John Steed (Patrick Macnee) and his various assistants, Dr. David Keel (Ian Hendry, 1961), Mrs Catherine Gale (Honor Blackman, 1962-4), Mrs. Emma Peel (Diana Rigg, 1965-7) and Tara King (Linda Thorson, 1968-9). The series was later revived as The New Avengers (1976-7) with Macnee returning as Steed, now joined by Mike Gambit (Gareth Hunt) and Purdey (Joanna Lumley). An unsuccessful, very miscast feature film reboot was made in 1998 with Ralph Fiennes as Steed and Uma Thurman as Emma Peel.
