The Bosporan Kingdom, also known as the Kingdom of the Cimmerian Bosporus was an ancient Greco-Scythian state located in eastern Crimea and the Taman Peninsula centered in the present-day Strait of Kerch. The Kingdom grew out of a number of Greek colonies founded in the 7th and 6th centuries BCE. Exporting furs, wheat, fish and slaves it became the economic center of the Black Sea region. In 63 BCE, after the end of the Mithridatic Wars, it became a Roman client Kingdom. The Kingdom continued to prosper through the middle of the 4th Century CE when it was conquered by a succession of migrating tribes including the Huns, Goths and Alans. Despite this the Kingdom maintained its Hellenistic language, culture and traditions until becoming part of the Byzantine Empire in the 7th Century CE. In the 10th or 11th century the Bosporus came under control of the tribes that evolved into modern day Russia.
