The Frye Company is a boot manufacturer that claims to be the oldest continuously operated shoe company in the United States.
The company was founded by John A. Frye and a partner in 1863 as a single shoe-making shop in Marlborough, Massachusetts. It gained renown from the production of multiple styles of boots, including harness boots (first designed in 1938) and engineer boots. It remained an enterprise of the Frye family until it was sold in 1945. The company was moved from Massachusetts in 1980. In 1998, it was purchased by JIMLAR Corp. and based in Great Neck, New York. The original John A. Frye Company of Massachusetts sold out in 2003, and was subsequently purchased, sold, bought, and re-sold by a string of holding companies. JIMLAR was acquired in 2010 by a Hong Kong based garment conglomerate named Li & Fung.
