Thomas Riker is a duplicate of Commander William Riker, created in a transporter accident, and appears in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. He first appears in the TNG episode "Second Chances" (Season 6, Episode 24).
In 2361, while serving aboard the USS Potemkin, William Riker was involved in a transporter malfunction on Nervala IV. The system created a duplicate—Thomas Riker—who was stranded on the planet for eight years, unaware that the original had been safely beamed out. He is discovered in 2369 by the crew of the USS Enterprise-D and takes the name Thomas to distinguish himself.
