Something Missing?

148 BCE to 46 CE

In the 5th century BCE, the Thracian people were a mostly rural group of tribes.  As the population grew, they came into conflict with their Greek and Macedonian neighbors.  During the Macedonian Wars (214 – 148 BCE) between Rome and Macedon, governance of Thrace came under Roman control as a client state.  In the last days of the Roman Republic, Thrace gave support to both Pompey and Caesar and fought with Brutus and Cassius against Antony and Octavian.  In the early Roman Imperial period the Kingdom went through a series of royal assassinations as different factions sought support of the Roman Emperors.  When Rhoemetalces III was murdered by his wife, in 46 CE, Thrace became an official Roman province and was governed by Procurators, and later Praetorian prefects.
