Something Missing?

The Totip, abbreviation of tot alizzato ip pico, was a prize competition whose objective was to predict the outcome of various horse races. Born after the Second World War, the game had considerable popularity until the eighties, and then gradually lost interest, until its closure in 2007.

The game was born in 1948, following a proposal promoted by SISAL and UNIRE to hold a prediction competition linked to horse racing. On the ticket were indicated 6 horse races, both trot and gallop, held on Sunday. The participating horses were divided into groups marked with the symbols 1, X, and 2 and the competitor had to guess the groups to which the first and second finishers belonged. To make the bettor's choice complex, the three theoretically favored horses were placed in three different groups.

The first Totip competition took place on May 30, 1948 and the two winners, from Milan and Naples, received almost a million and a half lire.

From 1984 to 1989 thanks to the union with the Sanremo Festival, the Totip coupons first matched a statistical referendum for the best song and, later, they became decisive for the choice of the winning song.

In 1995, the game was reformed by adding a seventh race (where you had to guess first and second of the horses in the race, indicated this time by numbers) and the jackpot. The odds then went from 12 to 14 and the game took the name of Totip +.
