Melkus was a mechanical engineer and had two children.

As the son of Heinz Melkus, a racing car designer and successful racing driver, Ulli Melkus was born into motorsport. He appeared as a driver and designer, e.g. B. the Melkus PT 73 Spyder and the formula car SRG MT 77, in the footsteps of his father and brought many victories. He began his motorsport career at the age of 15 with cross-country motorcycle races, a year later he started karting and then at the age of 18 he climbed into the GDR formula racing car, where he immediately won his first race. In 1984 he received the title " Master of Sports ", the highest sporting award in the GDR.

He died driving home from the Nürburgring in 1990 when a tire blew out on his car and his vehicle slid under a truck. His grave is in the Leubnitz-Neuostra cemetery in Dresden.

His son Ronny has been active in motorsport since 1985.
