Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant, April 27, 1822 - July 23, 1885) was an American soldier and politician who served as the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877. Before his presidency, Grant played a key role in the American Civil War, leading the Union Army to victory as Commanding General of the United States Army. As president, Grant led efforts to implement postwar reconstruction, support economic prosperity, remove the vestiges of Confederate nationalism and slavery, and protect African-American citizenship and civil rights.
