Invented in 1976 by the Victor Company of Japan (JVC), Video Home System (VHS) is an analog video recording on tape casettes. It was the standard on consumer level and the dominant home video format during the 1980s and 1990s. JVC also invented the VCR for use in watching VHS.
The cassettes use a 0.5-inch magnetic tape between two spools and typically offer a capacity of at least two hours. Pre-recorded movies were avalible to buy or rent. Blank tapes were also avalible for consumers to record home movies, current events or independant films. These were recorded on camcorders.
