The Historic City of York in North Yorkshire, UK was founded as the Roman garrison town Eboracum in 71 AD, known as Eoforwic during Anglo-Saxon times it bacame Yorvik when the Vikings settled there in the 9th Century, and finally York after the Norman conquest.
The many historic landmarks of the city include the York Minster, medieval city walls, the National Railway Museum, Clifford's Tower and the crooked timberframed buildings of medieval streets such as the Shambles (said to have been an inspiration for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter books and films).
Today York has a population of about 200,000.
