Fastelavn Girl pin - Cat Lady on a Barrel holding a beat club - Fastelavn (or carnival) is a feast that lies on the border of winter and spring. A tradition that goes back to Egypt and to the Romans. To dress up and party has always been part of life, and at Fastelavn the opportunity was even greater as masks and dresses for a time erased the differences in class - the peasant could dine at the same table as the baron. Everybody could loosen up a little, before Lent set in, and it was not allowed to eat any food.
In Europe, during the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed that a city could escape the plague, if a black cat was killed. In Denmark the black cats were put into a barrel, which was hung up, and the people would beat the barrel until it cracked and the cat fell out. When the cat was out, the children could whip the cat to death with sticks and branches. The tradition with a living cat was stopped in the 1830's and today the barrel is filled with candy for all to share, when the barrel cracks. Fastelavn is normally held in February.
