This all-new, totally updated, four-volume edition of Karl Ludvigsen’s masterpiece history of Porsche, the people, the company, the cars, the racing, covers all models from 1948 through 2020. In 1978, his first edition was the definitive marque history; later updates enhanced that reputation. For this final update, Ludvigsen reviewed newly available archival material, conducted new in-depth interviews, and unearthed fresh facts providing new and often surprising interpretations of many aspects of Porsche and its cars. Now in four hardbound volumes, 2,836 pages, with 2,192 historic photos and illustrations, every page of this all-new Excellence Was Expected was totally revised and redesigned, adding 66 new chapters, including 32 chapters for unique cars. Thirty chapters trace 911 evolution from the 1950s to the new 992. Competition history gets 44 chapters, taking you from the 550 Spyder to the impressive 919 Hybrid. Also examined are the successful Cayenne, Macan, and Panamera, as well as the new Taycan. A human drama unfolds as Ludvigsen presents the inner workings, masterpieces, and failures of the independent automaker. Remarkable for its breadth of coverage and technical depth, Excellence Was Expected has justifiably won every major automotive book award. If you have only one Porsche book, this should be it!
