1993 Topps Baseball Set

Series

Something Missing?

1993 Topps Baseball marked the first time since 1973 that the company's flagship set was split into two series. And at 825 cards, it's the line's largest set as well. 1993 Topps Series 1 Baseball has 396 cards. Series 2 has 429.

Card fronts are fairly simple. A large photo is framed by a white border. The nameplate at the bottom has the player's name and team and is held in by a pair of diagonal lines. 1993 Topps Baseball subsets include Draft Picks, Top Prospects, Major League managers, Coming Attractions, Future Stars and All-Stars.

The checklist is highlighted by the Derek Jeter rookie card. Beyond the Yankee legend, there's a significant drop off. Jim Edmonds and Jason Kendall lead the second tier of rookies.

For the second consecutive year, Topps produced a Gold parallel. These cards match the base cards except for a couple of minor difference. The Topps logo on the front of the card is changed to a Topps Gold logo done in gold foil. More noticeable is the nameplate, which is done entirely in gold foil. The base set's six checklist are replaced in Topps Gold with players who didn't make the final cut.

Also in 1993 Topps Baseball are Black Gold inserts and the somewhat complicated distribution. All 44 Black Gold cards are inserted randomly in packs. Collectors can also find redemption cards (now expired) for partial sets of 11 cards, half sets and full 44-card sets.

Traditional 1993 Topps Baseball factory sets have a complete 825-card base set, ten random Topps Gold cards, three Black Gold inserts and nine 1994 Preview cards.
