The Hobbit | Character

Something Missing?

Azog was a character from J.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Hobbit. He was an Orc cheiftain who commanded the tribes of Moria from TA 2790 until his death in TA 2799. Azog claimed rulership over the abandoned Dwarvish mines of Moria during the Third Age, becoming the leader of the Goblins of Moria and initiating the War of the Dwarves and Orcs by beheading King Thrór. He was also responsible for King Thráin's madness. He is referred to in a single remark by Gandalf to Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit: "Your grandfather Thrór was killed, you remember, in the mines of Moria by Azog the Goblin."

He is portrayed in the Peter Jackson Hobbit films by Manu Bennett.
