Barnes & Noble, founded in 1886, is an American bookseller and retail chain of books, music, video, gifts, and games, as well as digital content.
Barnes & Noble started as a single store named Arthur Hinds & Company, before changing its name in 1894 to Hinds & Noble. It eventually was renamed to its current name in 1917, when its founder Arthur Hinds was bought out by Clifford Noble, who then partned with William Barnes.
The brand and its stores began expanding between 1950 and 1960, growing throughout New York. It eventually was reduced to one store when it was bought for 1.2 million dollars in 1971. It then opened smaller discount stores until the 1980's, when it started opening larger stores again, and then expanding into online sales in the late 1980's, which eventually took over mail-order catalogs the company had used previously.
