Bilbo Baggins is the title character and protagonist of J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 novel 'The Hobbit', as well as a supporting character in The Lord of the Rings. Bilbo is credited as the author of The Hobbit or There and Back Again and translator of various "works from the elvish" (as mentioned in the end of The Return of the King). Bilbo Baggins was a hobbit of the Shire. At Gandalf's suggestion to Thorin, Bilbo was hired to be the Dwarves' burglar in the Quest of Erebor, and Bilbo later fought in the Battle of Five Armies. 

A younger Bilbo is portrayed by Martin Freeman and Ian Holm portrays an older Bilbo in the Peter Jackson Hobbit and Lord of the Rings films.
