In 1949, The Road Haulage Executive, trading as British Road Services (BRS), was created as part of a remarkable plan to nationalise transport across the UK.

In 1953, BRS began to generate its own business as the state run transport system was beginning to suffer.

In 1982, the privatisation of many of the UK's publicly owned businesses began. The National Freight Corporation (NFC) was an evolvement of the original Road Haulage Executive, which was transformed into a private company two years earlier. The now called NFCm, under which BRS traded, was fully privatised through a management/employee buy-out.

In 2006, Renault takes on financial responsibility for BRS - BRS still remains a wholly owned subsidiary of AB Volvo.
