Something Missing?

Chicago-based brothers Charles and Samuel Dowst were arguably as foundational to the toy car industry as Henry Ford was to the real thing. It was work on a smaller scale, perhaps, but also fully devoid of pro-Nazi sympathies.

Within a few years of the first Model Ts hitting the streets of Chicago, the Dowst brothers (who were both in their 50s by this point) seized on a simple and affordable way to miniaturize the revolutionary vehicle, using the latest in die-cast molding technology to create a brand new type of collectible for a car-crazy country.

The Chicago-based Dowst Brothers Company started making Tootsietoy dollhouse furniture in 1922. Made of a metal alloy in 1/2"=1' scale and enameled in several different colors. It is quite fragile and the soft metal is easily broken and the paint flakes easily. Consequently, the popularity of it waned in favor of sturdier wooden furniture and the company ceased production in 1937.
