Frank Kappler was born on September 13, 1914 in New York City, N.Y. and enlisted in the Army on October 3, 1942 at New York City. At the time of enlistment, Kappler was unmarried, had received a BA from Dartmouth College (1936) and working for the wire photo service, Acme Newspictures. He joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. where he was assigned to Company L of the 87th Mountan Infantry. He also became the founding editor for the Division's newspaper, the Blizzard. During combat operations in Italy, Kappler received the Bronze Star Medal for his actions at the Apennines in Spring 1945. Kappler attained the rank of Sergeant. After the war, he continued working on the staff for a number of prominant newspapers and magazines. Kappler died on January 9, 1999 in Fearrington Village, N.C.
