As interim instance with certain competencies and thus de facto in many areas was almost independent according to § III 14 of the Rules of the German Reichsbahn Society, the group administration Bavaria with its own central office (Zentrales Maschinen- und Bauamt). The Bavarian Reichsbahn directorates were thus not directly subordinate to the headquarters of the Reichsbahn, but the group administration, which acted formally as part of the head office. Although the group administration did not receive full financial autonomy, as demanded several times by Bavaria until the mid-1920s, it nevertheless had its own budget within the Reichsbahn. She was responsible for the electrification of many routes after the start of traction power generation at the Walchensee power plant and for the independent testing and procurement of locomotives and passenger coaches. The group administration presented u. a. Locomotives of the class E 32 and railcar series ET 85 in service. With the series 98.10 the group administration let 1929 develop a local railway locomotive according to the traditional principles of the Bavarian state railways.

In 1933 the group administration was dissolved. Since then, the Bavarian Reichsbahn Directorates, like all other directors, have been directly subordinate to the headquarters of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in Berlin.
