The Harz narrow gauge railways GmbH (HSB), based in Wernigerode is a railway company, the one about 85 mile network of mostly steam-powered narrow gauge lines in the resin as a railway infrastructure company and a railway company operates. It is today the largest contiguous rail network in Europe under steam. It is in operation year-round, has the gauge of 1000 mm (meter gauge) and consists of Harzquerbahn, Selketalbahn and Brockenbahn. The initial letters of the tracks also give the abbreviated name of the company.

Three of the six terminus stations (Nordhausen Nord, Quedlinburg, and Wernigerode) have a connection to Deutsche Bahn's regular-gauge network. In addition to the Brohltalbahn and the Wangerooger Inselbahn, the Harz narrow-gauge railway is today one of the last three narrow-gauge railways with goods traffic in Germany.

In passenger transport, the HSB is now used mainly by tourists and excursionists (eg hikers), the actual regional traffic in terms of work and school traffic plays only in the area Nordhausen/Ilfeld and on the section Quedlinburg-Gernrode (Harz) a more significant role.
