The airline started with DC-3, DC-6, Vickers Viscount and Avro York till the 60's when the Jet era begun with Boeing's early B707, 727 and 737s.

After 1974, the B747-100 200 and SP took over the long haul flights. In 1972 Iran Air placed an order for 2 Concorde Jets but the raise of the Iranian revolution in 1980 cancelled them. Iran Air did get to lease a Concorde for a few flights but not with its own livery. In 1978 the airline acquired 6 Airbus A300B2K for its 31 international destinations.

From 2010 to 2014, the airline suffered several refueling Bans within EU, UK and US airports. After 2014, Iran Air got clearace and now flies major airports such as Frankfurt, Paris, London and Amsterdam.

Airline subsidiaries are the IRAN AIR CARGO,  Iran Airtour and the HOMA Hotelgroup.
