Steed was aided in his adventures by a number of partners, most notably a succession of attractive and independent ladies; Mrs. Catherine Gale (Honor Blackman), Mrs. Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) and Tara King (Linda Thorson). When he returned in The New Avengers, he was assisted by two new partners, a male agent named Mike Gambit (Gareth Hunt) and a female spy called Purdey (Joanna Lumley). He had also retired his vintage cars in favour of a new racing Jaguar XJ12C, but still wore his bowler hat. Steed was played by Patrick Macnee.
