Johnson Quarles was hired by Mattel in the late 1960s as an apprentice model maker under a program to help Black minorities. While at Mattel he created wood carvings of the Maserati Mistral and Rear Loader Volkswagen Beach Bomb. Quarles later became an airline pilot and retired in Alaska.
