The brewery used to be named Völlersche Brauerei (1860-1908), United Brewery AG Meiningen (1908-1946), VEB Vereinigte Brauereien Meiningen (1946-1971), Beverages Combine Rennsteig-Meiningen (1971-1990), Meiningen Brewery (1990- 1992), brewhouse Meiningen (1992-1995), and Meininger private brewery Müller GmbH + Co.KG (1995-1999).

With the political change , the combine dissolved and the production of the now-owned brewery Meiningen reduced to the absolute low point of 17,000 hectoliters. The Schickedanz company group Fürth buys the brewery in 1992 and divides this into the brewery Meiningen GmbH of the Patrizierbräu in Nuremberg . The beer production could then be doubled. In 1995, the Koblenzer Roland Müller took over the brewery and together with the acquired breweries Thuringia brewery Mühlhausen , Riebeck brewery Gera and Wartburg breweryEisenach brewed the Meininger private brewery Müller GmbH + Co.KG with 40 employees 125,000 hectoliters of beer and beer mixed drinks.

After a total execution took over 1999 the Unterfränkische brewer Klaus Weidringer from Roth an der Saale the Meininger brewery and led them as Meininger private brewery GmbH again on successful course, but could not develop the company in the long run to a stable enterprise.

Following bankruptcy filings in March 2011 and a futile search for new investors, the insolvency administrator announced in January 2012 the liquidation and winding-up of the company until 29 February 2012, the brewery must be vacated by 31 July 2012. Then the city Meiningen secured the rights to the brand of beer Meininger, the first by the club Apolda as draft beer is brewed and distributed further by Meininger beverage company in the Meininger region. The festival beer for the Meininger Hütesfest is brewed in the Rhönbrauerei Kaltennordheim.
