A member of the 13 original colonies, New York officially became the nation's 11th state on July 26, 1788.

The state's geography is as diverse as its popluation, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes.

Aside from New York City and its five boroughs, other major municipalities include Buffalo, Syracuse, and Albany, the state capital.
