The Star Wars Holiday Special was a television special that aired on November 17, 1978, on CBS. Its central plot was based around Chewbacca's family celebrating the Wookie holiday Life Day tying together different short skits and segments. The program was extremely negatively received by fans and critics alike and has not been broadcast or released on home video since.

However despite this home video recordings of the special have circulated in nerd communities throughout the years and has become something of a cult phenomenon, particularly since the advent of internet culture. Despite this series creator George Lucas has not been shy of admitting his hatred of the special. He has gone as far as saying that if he had the time, resources, and a hammer, he would destroy every copy in existence.
