Tennessee is regarded as part of the first constitutional goverment located west of the Appalachians, before the area that now encompasses Tennessee and North Carolina was divided into two states. The former joined the union on June 1, 1796, making Tennessee the nation's 16th state.

Tennessee was the last state to leave the union for the confederacy during the Civil War and the first readmitted at the war's conclusion.
