Something Missing?

The Transwaggon Group, based in Zug, Switzerland, is a landlord of rail freight cars. It is owned by the Waggon Holding in equal parts VTG and the Waggonconsult, which is held by the founding family around the current CEO, Per-Anders Benthin.

The company was founded in 1965. The first transporter car was delivered by Interconsult (Sweden) in June 1965 as a three-axle flatcar unit. The chosen design made it possible to load vehicles across the middle of the unit (close coupling), thereby increasing capacity utilization by up to 50%. Together with the lowered floor height of only 1,000 mm, this was a pioneering development for the rail. The following years were marked by many new developments as well as the founding of further subsidiaries. Four-axle, short-coupled flat cars were soon available in addition, followed by the first types of covered cars, currently without modern wall systems. The cars were replaced relatively soon by sliding wall wagons, whose opening also included the slope of the roof area. Transwaggon was a pioneer in this field, even when it was necessary to develop and procure such cars for the large profile G2. In addition, there were wagons that could be loaded or unloaded both by crane and with industrial trucks.

The company manages a fleet of approximately 13,500 freight wagons (of which around 1,700 are flat wagons and around 11,800 covered hood and sliding wall wagons) and has subsidiaries in Germany, France, Italy, & Sweden, as well as representative offices in Poland, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic. The group provides its services in the Europe-wide network of branch offices. The customers of the group can decide on the duration and type of use of the cars. It is essential to differentiate between long-term rental and travel charter services (rental for individual trips). In doing so, Transwaggon leaves the choice of the railway undertaking (RU) i. d. R. the client or consignor.
