The University of Tennessee is a land- and sun-grant college located in Knoxville, Tenn. The school was founded in 1794, two years before Tennessee officially became a state. Considered one of the oldest institutions in the nation, Tennessee is the lone university in the country to hold three presidential papers editing programs, having been the home to former heads of state Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk and Andrew Johnson.

Tennessee's mascot is the Volunteers and it sports teams play out of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
