Brewery

Something Missing?

Weldebräu is a private brewery in the Palatinate municipality of Plankstadt in Germany with an annual output of around 100,000 hectoliters.

Elector Carl Theodor awarded in 1752 to the brewery master Heinrich Joos the license to brew. Joos built a residential and brewhouse with a small brewery on Mannheimer Straße in Schwetzingen . Nothing is known from the beginning. From 1846 the brewery was run by brewmaster Heinrich Seitz and the restaurant Grünes Laub in the house was a renowned restaurant in the whole region. Heinrich and Anna Seitz handed over the house to their son Georg, who died already in 1885. In 1888, his widow Barbara married the brewing master Johann Welde, the namesake of these brewing products until today. Her son Bernhard fell in the First World Warin France. After the death of Johann Welde in 1917, his widow continued with the daughter Elisabeth Brewery and -ausschank. In 1919 Elisabeth married the young brewing master Hans Hirsch. This extended the brewery from 1934 to 1935 considerably. The son fell in World War II in Africa. The daughter Bärbel married Wilhelm Spielmann in 1950. Hans Hirsch died in 1959. In his memory, the family crest of the Hirsch family was depicted on the bottle labels and beer mats of the brewery for decades. Wilhelm Spielmann took over after Hirsch's death, the sole management of the company. Since a further enlargement was not possible, in 1971 the new construction of the bottling and 1981 the brewhouse in the neighboring Plankstadt. Here, the transformation from a small brewery to a modern private brewery with a diverse range of beers took place.
