Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (October 2nd, 1869-January 30th, 1948) was the leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
Gandhi was assassinated on January 30th, 1944 by Hindu nationalist Nathuram Godse. His birthday is celebrated as the International Day of Nonviolence, as well as being a national holiday in India.
