Mark Antony, was a Roman politician and general who played a critical role in the transformation of the Roman Republic from a constitutional republic into the autocratic Roman Empire.
Antony was a relative of Julius Caesar and rose to power as one of his generals. After Caesar's assassination in 44 BCE, Antony, along with Marcus Aemilius Lepidus and Octavian and, after defeating Caesar's assassins, divided the government of the Republic between themselves. Relations between the triumvirs were not good. Antony's divorce of Octavian's sister in 32 BCE and subsequent marraige to Cleopatra made them worse. Finally, in 31 BCE the Senate declared war on Cleopatra and condemed Antony as a Traitor resulting civil war between Antony and Cleopatra in the east and Octvaian in the west. Octavian ulitmately defeated Antony, who commited suicide.
